India Women Team Won Match Against Pak Women team and placed 7th in ICC Women's Cricket World Cup

WOMEN'S WORLD CUP

India beat Pakistan for 7th place

India beat Pakistan for 7th place

Women's World Cup: India beat Pakistan to finish 7th

Indian captain Mithali Raj scored a brilliant century to lead her side to an easy victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in the seventh place play-off in the ICC Women's World Cup 2013 at Cuttack on Thursday.
Mithali scored 103 off 141 deliveries, an innings laced with 13 boundaries and one six as she took her side past Pakistan's total of 192. They worked hard for their four wickets but their failure to get rid of Mithali led to their defeat.
Earlier, Indian bowlers kept a tight leash over Pakistan's scoring rate to restrict their arch-rivals to 192 for seven in the seventh-eighth position play-off match of the Women's cricket World Cup.
The decision to bat first after winning the toss didn't quite work for Pakistan, who were saved to a large extent due to the contrasting half-centuries from Nain Abidi (58) and Nida Dar (68 not out).
The Indians bowlers, led by the economical pace duo of Jhulan Goswami (two for 17) and Nagarajan Niranjana (three for 35), kept it tight for most part of the 50 overs.

Reduce VIP security to ensure women's safety, SC tells Delhi police

Feb. 7, 2013 Thursday
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Delhi Police to withdraw from VIP security and instead deploy their resources for safety of women in the city.
Replying to Delhi Police's argument that it deploys over thousands of personnel for security of judges, the top court said that the security should depend on threat perception. The court asked the police to instead use its personnel for better purposes like making the Delhi roads safe for women.
The SC has asked states to file affidavit on deployment of policemen for VVIP security by February 11, failing which it will ask home secretaries to appear personally in the court on February 16.

Women's world cup: Time for India to rise and shine

Anand Sachar, Hindustan Times
Mumbai, January 30, 2013

Quite often, it is after prolonged gloom that brightness appears. And for the Indian women’s cricket team that is struggling with obscurity, the World Cup that sets off in Mumbai on Thursday is a great opportunity to step out of their uneventful existence.

Women’s cricket came under the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2006. Yet, the situation is far from ideal. While the funds and facilities provided by the BCCI have been inadequate, the worst aspect has been the lack of action on the field.http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/Popup/2013/1/31_01_13-metro21b.jpg
Though the team managed a couple of practice games and camps in Bangalore and Mumbai recently, India last played international cricket in the United Kingdom last July.
“The BCCI must wake up. And it will only happen if the girls do well here. Then they must get better treatment,” Edulji asserted.
That the World Cup matches scheduled at the Wankhede were shifted elsewhere to accommodate the Ranji Trophy final only highlights the indifferent attitude towards women’s cricket in India.
India will be playing hosts for the third time, but Edulji does not believe that will help improve the situation.
“We need people to watch, and they won’t come in these big metropolitan cities. These games should have been at smaller centers.”http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/Popup/2013/1/31_01_13-metro21c.jpg
Despite that, the comfort of home conditions could work in India’s favour in the 10th edition of the event.
In the opener, India clash with West Indies at the Brabourne Stadium. Edulji signed off on a hopeful note.
“Maybe this is the turning point. Maybe this will lay a platform for the girls in the future.”

Shaken by the brutal gangrape incident in Delhi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today made a strong pitch for starting women empowerment from home.

JAIPUR : January 18, Friday

Women empowerment should start from home: Sonia Gandhi

Shaken by the brutal gangrape incident in Delhi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today made a strong pitch for starting women empowerment from home.

"Mothers should teach their boys how to respect women in their family and in the neighbourhood. Women empowerment should start from home," she was quoted as having said at the party's Chintan Shivir in Jaipur.

She spent 30 minutes in the meeting of Congress group on women empowerment headed by MP Girija Vyas.
Earlier, in her opening remarks, Mrs Gandhi asked partymen to bring gender issues to "the heart of our political activity" saying the "very disturbing trends" against women and children should wake the party.

In her address, she described atrocities on women as a blot on conscience and a matter of shame, and stressed that gender issues should not just confined to Mahila Congress or women organisations only.

"I must say with the greatest anguish and pain that discrimination against the girl child continues. Atrocities on women, both in urban and rural India, are a blot on our collective conscience and a matter of great shame," Mrs Gandhi said.

"The way we still treat widows, the prevalence of female foeticide even in economically prosperous regions, the trafficking of children and women, brazen sexual harassment - these are all very disturbing trends that should shake and awaken us," she said.

"The entire party must understand them, and bring them to the heart of our political activity and change mindset," she added.
